To my dismay I learned about a porn site that uses extortionist and absolutely unacceptable tactics to bill users. According to the news, they let surfers sign up for “free” for three days and if the membership is not cancelled within that time frame your computer will be taken over! You’ll get pop-ups that you can’t remove and your computer will be controlled by THEM.

They even state so in their terms of service disclaimers but who the hell reads that crap, right? So they make you install a program and then you’re fucked: Basically you’ll get hit with a pop-up nightmare and possibly won’t be able to use your computer at all if you sign up with their scum bag site and don’t cancel. In order to get rid of the pop-up hell and get back your control over your computer they force you to pay a steep fee. Rediculous!

So for the slow of learning some advice: If a dialog box pops up that tells you to save/download a program (.exe) file and you didn’t specifically look for this program, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT.  This goes for every site on the web, and all your emails. Again, if you didn’t ask for a program and it tries to download one anyhow don’t do it. 

•  Besides Flash, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, and maybe Shockwave you should never have to download anything else to watch porn.
•  No legitimate adult site forces users to download any programs or “custom viewers”. None.

I’m outraged about this – sleazy bullshit tactics like this give everyone in the adult industry a bad rep because the media didn’t specify what “adult site” they were talking about when they broke the news. So uninformed consumers might think all adult sites are alike.

This is not so.

So I’d like to officially distance myself from this practice and let you know that shit like this is absolutely not in any way typical or normal for site operators. The outfit running this scheme appears to be operating out of Great Britain (according to WHOIS.net information) and has its own billing system (that’s how they get around this). I do not know these people and would never do business with people like this.

• When you go searching for your porn please always make sure you only go to trusted sites.
• Go to review sites to get the scoop on the sites in question.
• Do a search or two in Google and Yahoo and see what comes up. Negative reviews tend to spread quickly on the web.
• If possible make sure the sites you are interested in are run by US-based companies. The US does have excellent consumer protection laws all US based companies, including porn sites, need to follow them. Failure to do so can have very severe consequences, more so than in many other countries where consumer protection isn’t enforced as strictly.

In a nutshell, for some reason almost all problems recently are because of a corrupted Windows Media Player file. To find out if your WMP is screwed up download the free VLC Media Player and play your movie files. If it works on the VLC player your Windows Media Player is corrupted. If so you simply uninstall Windows Media Player and download and re-install a fresh copy on your system. You can find the latest version of the Windows Media Player here.

Don’t ask me why. My suspicion is that one of the recent Microsoft updates caused many Windows Media Players to get corrupted. Or it could just be coincidence that many users all of a sudden experience problems with their Windows Media Player. I don’t know.

Whatever the reason, I rarely ever get emails about problems with our videos and virtually all of the emails from the past few weeks dealt with broken Windows Media Players.  All members followed my steps on the video trouble shooting page and are now able to play all of our videos perfectly.

By the way, the other emails not dealing with Windows Media Player problems were from Mac users. The question/problem is always the same and the solution here was simple: you must have the latest version of Flip4Mac to play WMV movies on your Apple box.

Detailed note: only the most recent Flip4Mac software can play WMVs that were encoded with the Microsoft Windows Media 9 Advanced Profile codec. There’s not a lot of them out there yet but the number is growing so you’ll need to get your new Flip4Mac soon.

 Miami Vice. Grainy as hell, especially in night shots. 300 same thing. Superman returns. Grain hell!

These movies have something in common, they were shot (primarily) on digital cameras, not film cameras. Superman was shot in the Panavision Genesis, Miami Vice on the Thomson Viper, 300 has a mix of film and digital cameras (director Zach Snyder actually shot scenes with up to 3 cameras at once. He’s a god by the way.). 

Digital cameras, even with their latest technological improvements, still have some drawbacks, one of them being the fact that their image sensors (CCDs or CMOS chips) are more limited in the way they can capture footage than 35 mm film.

In short: digital cameras need more light to work. Highlights are blown out and dark areas are “crushed” more easily than with good film stock.

The grain you see in your digitally shot movies is referred to as Electronic Noise or Digital Noise.

In short: there will be no grain if the scene is lit well and shot correctly. The Electronic Noise (“grain”) comes if the sensor doesn’t have enough light to work with.

Film is grainy too, yeah. That’s a different type of grain though.

Each film stock has its own particular type of film grain and directors sometimes use this to achieve a certain look.

The grain you are referring to is caused by those sensor limitations - very generally speaking, the darker the scene, the more grain (electronic noise, digital noise) you see. On a small scale you’ll notice this when you fire up your consumer video camera. Shoot something in bright outdoors, then shoot something in a dark room. Boom, more fucking grain. And if you amp up your “gain setting” it gets worse.

The less light the digital video camera gets, the tougher it is for the chips. The less light, the more grain.

So why are some movies shot on digital video cameras not that grainy?

You’ll notice how some scenes are practially free of grain, even though they might be pretty dark.

There’s an evil secret you should know about: sometimes scenes that appear to be shot at night were actually shot well lit. The scene is made to look like night artificially in post production. Since the scene was originally shot with enough light for the image sensors to do their magic, little or no digital noise appears.  Neat huh?

This in a nutshell is why you see so many high profile movies with a ton of grain.

Other reasons for grainy scenes

- sometimes a scene has CG elements that just look too fake. Or the scene was shot with great lighting and the scene still looks too fake, too “plastic” and clean. By adding a bit of grain some directors feel it makes the final scene look more organic.

- some directors like to add fake grain to give the movie an aged look. Zodiac was shot digitally on the Thomson Viper Filmstream (digital camera so potentially more grain from the get-go) but AFAIK even more grain was added later to give it that 70’s look, whatever the hell that means. This is not verified however I believe it.

- Sometimes the grain/noise you see in theaters has nothing to do with the movie itself. It’s a shitty copy that’s running through the projector behind you. Get out and get your money back. (That’s right, most movie theaters run rolls of film through projectors. That film could introduce noise/grain that’s not in the actual movie. )

Side note: While others have pointed out the graininess, personally I’ve only seen Superman Returns on DVD and did not notice any significant grain. In fact I feel the Superman footage to be among the most pristine looking of the current batch of digitally shot Hollywood movies.
